# How to create effective prompts

> Choose and phrase prompts so your results reflect what real buyers ask AI.

Your prompts decide what RankRaft AI measures. A good set mirrors the questions your buyers actually type into ChatGPT or Google.

## Do

* **Write like a buyer, not a marketer.** "best accounting software for freelancers" rather than "leading cloud financial management platform".
* **Lead with Discovery.** Questions with no brand in them are where AI decides who to recommend to new customers. Most of your set should be Discovery and Comparison.
* **Be specific to your niche.** "best CRM for a 20-person design studio" will tell you more than "best CRM", where the answer is dominated by the largest vendors.
* **Include a few Brand prompts.** "is *brand* any good" shows how AI describes you and whether it gets the facts right.
* **Keep prompts short.** One question per prompt, no instructions to the AI.

## Don't

* **Don't add the location yourself.** Your market is added automatically. Writing "best pickle brand in Pakistan" with market *Pakistan* states it twice.
* **Don't name your brand in Discovery prompts.** It guarantees a mention and tells you nothing.
* **Don't track questions nobody asks.** If a prompt never produces an answer that names *any* brand, the Action Center suggests replacing it.

## Checking your set

After a week of scans, open [Prompts & Answers](/analytics/prompts/prompts-and-answers) and sort by **Importance**:

* Prompts with **High importance** (you're never named) and a strong **Top competitor** are your real gaps. They feed the Action Center.
* Prompts where *no* brand is ever named are wasted slots. Replace them.
